The Inquisitor’s Tale

Screen Shot 2016-06-17 at 4.15.51 PMThis fantasy novel about three magical children and their holy dog transports readers to Medieval France. The children and their dog are fugitives who battle dragons, knights, kings, and monks in order to protect what is most valuable. The story, being told by multiple quirky travelers at an inn, takes readers through the French countryside, Paris, and finally Mont-Saint-Michel.  The masterful storytelling was richly researched and intertwines real historical figures, such as King Louis and Gwenforte the Holy Greyhound, with characters such as Jeanne, based loosely upon Joan of Arc. The traditional illumination on the borders of the text adds to the fast paced action of the tale. amo

Where’s The Elephant?

where-s-the-elephant-Throughout this nearly wordless picture book, readers are encouraged to find an elephant, a parrot, and a snake in their habitat. The double page spreads created through a collage of acrylic and pencil show a beautiful forest being overtaken through deforestation. Slowly, the forest habitat is taken away and the animals must try to find a way out of the concrete jungle that is now surrounding them. This story will start conversations with young readers about the importance of taking care of our forests so that animals may stay in their natural habitats. amo

Meh

MehA nameless boy is enjoying his life, when for no real reason, a blob grabs him and pulls him down into a dark, misty swamp. He sees ghost-like white paw prints that lead to a friendly cat in a tree. Together, they escape the swamp and climb up a mountain. As they struggle, the cat turns into a tiger.   They roar together and return to the beautiful world. This wordless book addresses depression in a safe and simple manner. The digitally created work was the author’s fourth year honors project for her BA in computer arts at the University of Abertay Dundee, Scotland. Questions to encourage discussion are included. mjw

My Wild Family

my wild familyThe young girl narrator connects animal traits with the characteristics of her truly special family and friends in this oversize picture book. Her older brother is strong and respected, like an elephant. Her mother is tall, beautiful, and shy, like a giraffe and her father can be fierce, like a lion. A page of monkeys climbing on an electric power structure shows her cousins, who are “fast and flexible, always quick to monkey around.” The book ends with the question, “And you? What makes you special?” The animals in each double-page spread are not anthropomorphized and they appear in realistic settings – a classroom, a street scene, the beach, and more. The primitive-style paintings are rendered in gouache. The story provides great examples of metaphor and is perfect for storytime sharing because of its large format.. mjw
