Bruno: Some Of The More Interesting Days In My Life So Far

brunoBruno, the cat with the checkered cap, takes his life as it comes. Six interconnected funny stories each tell about a day in Bruno’s life. On a rainy day, he rustles up a breakfast picnic. On a day when the power goes out, he lights candles. When he meets a red fish swimming in the air, he follows it. The colorful cartoon illustrations add humor to these silly stories. mjw

Stop Feedin’ Da Boids!

stop-feedin-da-boidsWhen Swanda and her dog Waldo move from the countryside to Brooklyn, Swanda misses the wildlife she left behind . . . but not for long. She discovers pigeons and decides to give them a bird feeder all their own. But more and more pigeons come until the situation really gets out of hand. Swanda asks various people for help – the Pest Control Officer, the Zookeeper, and an Exotic Bird Fancier from Peru. They cannot help. At this point her neighbors step in and offer their Brooklynese solution: “Swanda, You Gotta Stop Feedin’ Da Boids!” Swanda is not happy without animals and then she sees a fish in a pet shop window. Vibrant pencil and digitally illustrated artwork add to this amusing tribute to multicultural New York. mjw

The Boring Book

the-boring-bookOnce there was a BORING book that no one ever read. People who tried to read it fell asleep. The words in the book were tired of standing in rows, so they escape to have fun. They jump into street signs and shop signs. They dance all over the pages until the wordplay gets out of hand. Unusual and colorful graphics and three-dimensional miniature books within the book are imaginative and add to the fun. mjw

Under The Umbrella

under-the-umbrellaIt’s raining and a grumpy man growls at the crowds and the clouds until a sudden gust takes his umbrella. In the distance is a colorful patisserie with a window full of cakes and creams and cookies. The umbrella lands at the feet of a little boy who is looking into the window. The man thanks the boy and offers him a rich, red rhubarb-raspberry tart. Then, the boy carefully breaks the tart in two, giving the man the larger part. Bold, fantastical illustrations that play with perspective, shape, and color accompany the rhyming text which is a delightful read-aloud. mjw

The Sleeper And The Spindle

the sleeper and the spindleSnow White meets Sleeping Beauty in this dark and definitely different adaptation of several classic tales. On the eve of her wedding, a young queen sets out with three dwarf companions to rescue a princess. Also, there is a sleeping plague sweeping the land and the queen wants to get to the bottom of the magical curse. They encounter cobweb-covered sleepers on the way to the castle tower, where they find the sleeping princess, who has been there for 70 years, and an old woman. The queen’s kiss wakes the princess. Here, the story veers off course again to a nontraditional, but satisfying ending. Intricate ink drawings with touches of gold bring all the twists and turns in the mash-up fairy tale to life. mjw
