Malo And The Merry-Go-Round

Malo is supposed to help his best friend, Poto, make pickles, but he hears that there is a new merry-go-round at the pond in the forest and that’s where he goes. Malo passes a wild boar who needs help getting a biting tick removed, but Malo is off in a rush. He meets a gang of turtles who want to play, but Malo lies to them and darts away. Next, he meets a cuckoo and again Malo is off in a huff.  Finally he slips on a dung beetle’s ball of dung, but still continues on his way. He gets to the merry-go-round and decides that it’s no fun playing alone. He should have stayed with Poto to make pickles and not hurt his friends. Malo rushes back to Poto’s house and the two best friends right Malo’s wrongs together. Bold watercolors complement this cute parable. mjw

My Long List Of Impossible Things

Sixteen-year-old Katja, her eighteen-year-old sister Hilde, and their mother are forced out of their house in Germany when Soviet troops take over their village after WW II. German society has collapsed and there is much hardship and violence.  Their mother is killed and the two girls make a long and dangerous journey to another town on their own.  The story is told from the point of view of Katja and the German teenage post war perspective and is rarely examined in young adult fiction.  Katja questions so much about her country, but manages to make a new life for herself.  One thing that saves Katja is her love of the piano.  Interesting facts about famous composers are sprinkled throughout this brilliant novel. mjw

The Rhythm Of The Rain

Issac is playing with a jar of water in his favorite pool on the side of the mountain until it starts to rain. When the rain stops, he follows the streams of water down the mountainside, over a waterfall, and into deeper and wider rivers.  Through the countryside and through the city, Issac wonders where the water from his jar has gone.  Eventually it reaches the great ocean.  Storms occur and some of the water climbs, as mist, into the sky.  The mist cools and turns into a cloud that floats over a mountain in a country far away from Issac’s pool.  Rain falls and the cycle begins again as it has done for millions of years.  Digitally created full-bleed landscapes of blues and greens (with silver rain on the book jacket) show the story of the water cycle. mjw

You’re Strong With Me

A new baby giraffe bounds through the grasslands and her mother tells her not to wander off on her own. The mother explains the oxpecker bird, fire, baby fish in the creek, and always proclaims, “…you’re strong with me.” Shades of brown and gold and triangle and diamond shapes are reminiscent of African textiles.  The original artwork was created with ink on paper and completed digitally.  Companion books are You’re Safe With Me and You’re Snug With Memjw

Cherry Blossom And Paper Planes

Adin and Dina are best friends.   They live on a farm and share a love of cherries, climbing the trees to eat the fruit, and saving the pits to plant around the village.  When Adin moves to the city, Dina misses him and her summer becomes long and lonely.  Adin is lonely, too, in the city.  Dina’s father takes her to the city to visit Adin.  They climb to a balcony on Adin’s apartment building and fold paper airplanes that can hold the cherry pits.  They send the planes into the air.  After a long winter apart, spring arrives and the blossoming cherry trees seem to provide a trail between the two best friends.  The rich illustrations that are hand-drawn using gouache and pen gently depict the green and yellow village and the city Adin and his mother move to.  This is a sensitive story about the power of friendship. mjw
