Because of manga and anime, youth interest in Japan is rising. Hannah‘s Winter is one of the few contemporary novels set in Japan. In this middle-grade ghost-mystery, an Australian girl named Hannah, fluent in Japanese, spends a winter with the eccentric Japanese family of her new friend Miki. Together they find an ancient message and are drawn into solving a mysterious riddle to help a boy from a past age. A useful author’s note serves to help the reader distinguish between which locations, historical references, and so forth are fact and which are fiction. This novel is a compelling combination of fact, fantasy, and humor filled with intriguing characters, exotic locations, and strange events. ew |
