Crossing The Finish Line

Sri Lankan Ranatunge was the first runner to represent his country in the Olympics. He was a soldier who trained to be an elite athlete. On the day of the 10,000-meter race at the 1964 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, “Karu” had a bad cold, but he ran his best for his family and his country. He believed that “participating is more important than winning.” He didn’t win the race, but when he finally crossed the finish line, he imagined what being first would feel like. This inspiring nonfiction picture book about courage and perseverance is illustrated with colorful, spirited art. Back matter includes more information about Ranatumge Karungnanda and an Author’s Note. mjw
